Inspirations from a Real Palace
Ever since opening its doors in 2009, Mardan Palace has become one of the staples of ultra-luxury hotels in Turkey. A grand palace taking inspiration from the Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul itself, and even Leonardo da Vinci. Let’s take a look at the glimpses of this love letter to Istanbul’s old glamour.
Bosphorus in the Mediterranean
Mardan Palace takes its main inspiration from the Dolmabahçe Palace in Istanbul. Replicating the Dolmabahçe Palace’s iconic entrance and Neo-Baroque architectural style, Mardan Palace looks like a reminder of old-world wonders with a modern twist. Upon entering this modern palace, the lobby greets its visitors with a dance of gold and crystal, the iconic staircase taking focus in its grandeur—taking inspiration from the Dolmabahçe Palace’s own grand staircase.
An Ode to da Vinci
Mardan Palace is a declaration of love for Istanbul itself. With one of the biggest swimming pools in Europe in its midst, the hotel becomes an allegory for the Bosphorus. The grand U-shaped building consists of two differently styled wings: Europe and Anatolia, just like the real Bosphorus. In the middle of the giant pool rests a life-size replica of the Maiden’s Tower, housing the gastronomic hub of the Mardan Palace. At the peak of the tower, a view of the hotel and the Mediterranean Sea creates an unforgettable moment.
An Underwater Journey
In 1502, Leonardo da Vinci prepared a bridge design for the Galata province of Istanbul. That design was never realized in Galata and the bridge stayed only on paper until it was built within Mardan Palace. It’s now a connection between the two sides of the giant pool, a reminder of visionary engineering and the historic magic of Istanbul.
While many grand places exist within Mardan Palace, one is a little bit more special. The Aquamarine is a restaurant located under the Maiden’s Tower. Its magic starts the moment you set foot into the dimly lit restaurant, with a 400,000-gallon giant aquarium system welcoming you with many different fish species native to the Mediterranean. The Aquamarine specializes in seafood; thankfully, none of the residents of the grand aquarium are on the menu.
Mardan Palace is truly unique among the hotels in Turkey, in the sense of the intentional nature of its architectural love language towards the historic glamour of Istanbul. With its doors open to guests, you can take a journey through its inspirations in the beauty of the Mediterranean atmosphere.
